It’s in the cards!

Yes, now it’s official:

Denk Dakloos

Recently there was a special week in the netherlands, called ’7 days of inspiration (7di)’. During this week a lot of people did something to upgrade the country, mostly about social subjects.

Since I graduated in 2009 with my homeless-project I still wanted to do something with that subject. When I heared about 7di, I thought it was a perfect platform to actually do something.

Even though I documented homeless people, the non-homeless people were still prejudiced. This time I wanted to reach them. And the best way to reach people is to provoke. A guerilla-action was born.

With a friend of mine we made silhouets of sleeping homeless people in the city centre, where a lot of people walk. With the text Denk Dakloos (think homeless). Like this we made visable what you can only see by night. Hoping that people who saw the silhouets would relate the situation and life of a homeless more.

We used chalkpowder, so it disappeared after a while.

We also made a website: www.denkdakloos.nl
People can see and read here the contrast between a prejudice and reality.

We got more publicity than we expected! The project was in 3 newspapers and even on regional television.

Never use more than two different typefaces

Anneloes van Gaalen contacted me some time ago about a poster I made. She wanted to use it in one of her books about typography ‘rules’. Recently it got published by BISpublishers.

Also nice to see it in the BIS catalogue =)

Viewbook Emily Carr University

The summer of shred installation got published! It’s in the viewbook of the school I studied at, during my stay in Vancouver.

Click here if you want to see the digital book (page 17) and here if you want to order one yourself!

A boring workshop

A project I made with Marion Kadiz from Paris, during our stay in Estonia. We followed a workshop of two swedish designers (Peter Strรถm and Matthias Kreutzer) which was called ‘a boring workshop’. We had to choose a course from our highschool which we found boring. Ofcourse for the both of us this was maths! During this workshop we learned how to change something really uninteresting into something that you can enjoy.
First we just started taking pictures from our environment, in this case the city of Tallinn. We tried to make a story with this pictures. So we came up with the idea to tell the story threw an equation. So first we made a real equation (which was hard for us!) and replaced the letters with the pictures. Like in an equation you can be creative with positive and negative numbers and delete or change parts.
So in the end we tell a love story of a woman and two men…watch and understand.

Dan Karrasch

In Vancouver I met a canadian musician, Dan. He is really talented and is studying music at UBC. He is also playing on Granville Island, a creative centre in Vancouver. He needed a cd for during his performances, so he asked me to design it. He is also working on an album, can’t wait to hear it!

Almost going home

I saw so much Milton Glaser here in Vancouver. Only a canada/maple leaf version. And I saw too much maple leafs. So I guess this t-shirt is a bit sarcastic…

The Giant Bear

With this project I tried to experiment more with typography.
During my stay here in Canada I noticed the issues (especially during the olympics) around First Nation people.
I felt that this culture is slowly fading away. I did some research about this culture and I was really interested in their culture and their legends. These legends are also about the origin of this culture.
In a second hand book shop I found some books with all different legends and I choice ‘The Giant Bear’ to start my book with. The book starts with only this story and it ends with only newspaper quotes from the last 5 years in Canada.
This refers to the suppression of this culture and as I said is fading away and replaced by modern culture.
The format is a tabloid size.

Making of

I made a movie about how we made the installation for Summer of Shred.
It’s on Vimeo, here is the link:

Summer of Shred

I love to make type with all kinds of material. For this project we had the opportunity to do that!
Here are some photo’s from the type with shredded paper (based on Georgia).
There is also a making-of movie coming and some designs with it. Can’t wait to show them too.
